Health Education Classes

For newly-diagnosed diabetes patients or those needing a refresher course, this program provides information about proper self-management of diabetes. Subjects discussed will be, an explanation of what diabetes is, self-care guidelines, basic carbohydrate counting, meal planning, routine laboratory tests, foot care, infection precautions, stress management, exercise, medication use, self monitoring of blood glucose, and prevention, identification and treatment of complications. This program is for anyone with pre-diabetes or diabetes.
Provides in-depth information about healthy eating for people with diabetes. Subjects covered are carbohydrate counting, “the plate method”, label reading, portion control, meal planning, recipe modification and dining out guidelines. Participants will learn how to manage their blood sugars while continuing to include favorite foods. This program is for people who have a basic understanding of carbohydrate counting.
This program focuses on lifestyle changes, overall health and well being, rather than rapid weight loss. Subjects covered include basic weight loss and nutrition principles, meal planning, importance of exercise, smart shopping tips, stress management techniques, dining out guidelines and recipe modification. The program offers an on-going monthly support session.
Weight Management (Bariatric Program)
Patients must be referred to this program by our endocrinologist. After the patient is evaluated, and they are found to be an appropriate candidate for gastric bypass surgery; the patient participates in this group program for six months. The goal of the program is to provide information about the surgical procedure, and support the patient with their decision. Basic weight loss and nutrition principles, meal planning, importance of exercise, smart shopping tips, stress management techniques, dining out guidelines and recipe modification are discussed.
This class covers lifestyle changes that can help lower blood cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Subjects covered include, the definition of cholesterol and its fractions such as HDL and LDL, normal values for blood fats and blood pressure, dietary and shopping guidelines, recipe modification, dining out tips, exercise, weight and stress management, and smoking cessation.
Patients needing information or education on other subjects may be seen on an individual basis; i.e. Gestational Diabetes, Juvenile Diabetes, self-injection techniques, nutrition counseling.
