Comprehensive screening exam
To promote preventive care and wellness. If you are aged 19 through 39, please have the exam every three years. For ages 40 through 64, please have the exam every two years. Have the exam every year if you are 65 and over.
Cholesterol
Test more frequently than scheduled if at high risk for heart disease. If you are age 19 through 39, please have the test every three years. For ages 40 through 64, have the test every two years. Have the test at the doctor's discretion if you are 65 and over.
Chlamydia (STD) screening
To test for chlamydia in sexually active adults. Females: every year up to age 24 for those who are sexually active. Thereafter, at the doctor's discretion, based on risk. Males: at the doctor's discretion, based on risk.
Diabetes screening
To test for diabetes. At the doctor's discretion, once at age 45, then every three years if results are normal.
Stool blood (fecal test)
To detect colorectal cancer. Have the test every year after age 50.
Digital rectal exam (DRE)
To test for rectal cancer. Have the exam every year after age 50 .
Sigmoidoscopy
To test for colorectal cancer. Have the test every three to five years, beginning at age 50.
Diphtheria-tetanus vaccine
To protect against diphtheria and tetanus. Have the vaccine every ten years.
Flu shot
To help those at high risk, to fight against viruses. High-risk individuals (such as those with pregnancy, diabetes, or asthma): once per year with your doctor's recommendation. It is recommended that you have the shot every year at age 65 and older.
Pneumococcal vaccine
To protect against pneumonia. If at high risk, one immunization with your doctor's recommendation. For 65 and over, have the vaccine once. Repeat at your doctor's discretion.
FEMALES
Breast self-exam
To check for lumps and abnormalities. A monthly self-exam is recommended.
Breast exam by doctor
Manual exam to detect breast cancer. Have the exam every year.
Mammogram
Early detection of cancer. Have the test every one to two years starting at age 40.
Cervical cancer screening/pelvic exam
To detect cervical and ovarian cancer. Have the exam every year. If negative after three consecutive tests, at the doctor's discretion.
Rubella antibody
To determine rubella immunity. Have the test one time prior to your first pregnancy.
Osteoporosis, menopausal/postmenopausal for osteoporosis (risk screening)
To identify those at risk. Have the test every two years, if medically indicated.
MALES
Testicular self-exam
To detect testicular cancer. A monthly self-exam is recommended.
Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and DRE for prostate cancer
Blood test to detect prostate cancer. Guidelines vary. Please discuss with your doctor.
